A Christian magazine’s controversial posting explaining Jesus Christ’s ethnicity set off social media commentators on Christmas Eve.

Christianity Currently published a tale entitled, “How Asian Artists Photograph Jesus’ Start From 1240 to Now,” in which writer Victoria Emily Jones argued “Jesus was born in Asia. He was Asian.”

The image essay featured 9 parts of artwork from Asian cultures depicting the Nativity.

Jones claimed that by representing Jesus as Asian, Christian artists could portray a deeper “theological meaning” of “the universality of Christ’s birth.”

“Some could object to depicting Jesus as just about anything other than a brown male born into a Jewish loved ones in Bethlehem of Judea in the very first century, believing that doing so undermines his historicity. But Christian artists who tackle the subject matter of the Incarnation are frequently aiming not at historic realism but at theological indicating,” Jones wrote.

“By symbolizing Jesus as Japanese, Indonesian, or Indian, they express a feeling of God’s immanence, his ‘with-us–ness,’ for their possess communities—and for anyone else, the universality of Christ’s birth,” she defined.

Though the write-up was published on December 18, it drew interest on December 24 after the outlet posted it to social media system, X.

“Jesus was born in Asia. He was Asian. The artists in this photograph essay convey him again to Asia—but not to historical Israel. These nine artworks ‘proclaim the expansiveness of Christ’s kingdom,’” the outlet shared.

Commentators on X even so, turned down the article’s premise and mocked the evangelical outlet for advertising it.

Running editor for Christian satire news site The Babylon Bee, Joel Berry, joked, “Next can you remember to do an report with a bunch of AI photos of Jesus if He have been Rosa Parks.”

“Did you men read the Bible?” RedState columnist and writer Buzz Patterson replied to the put up.

Christian blogger Samuel Sey shot back again, “Blasphemy. Jesus is a Jew.”

“It’s needed for our salvation that he is a son of David, from the tribe of Judah, and born in Bethlehem. Quit this nonsense. He is not European, Asian, Palestinian or black. He’s a Jew—the king of the Jews and hence the saviour of the environment,” he extra.

Senior pastor of Western Ave Baptist Church Ekkie Tepsupornchai also responded to the write-up crafting, “I am Asian. Jesus was not. Nonetheless, Jesus is my Lord. And His sacrifice granted me the appropriate to become a kid of God. That is all that matters to me.”

Christianity Currently wasn’t the only media outlet that drew backlash for its commentary on Jesus this holiday break.

Father Edward Beck named Jesus a “A Palestinian Jew born into a time when his country was occupied,” on CNN Xmas morning.

Critics railed against the CNN guest on social media, blasting his “incorrect” record of Jesus Christ.
